New Cooking Classes at Forks in the Trail

(article in The Simcoe County Community News, Feb/Mar 2011)

Forks in the Trail Bed and Breakfast owner Tricia Frost contacted me recently to invite me out to talk about some new cooking classes she was offering at her beautiful B and B on Bass Lake Sideroad West in Oro-Medonte.  Once I got there, I found out that there is a lot more than cooking going on at Forks in the Trail!

The Bed and Breakfast is a beautiful large stone and wood house overlooking 105 acres of hills, fields and hardwood bush.  There is a breathtaking view out of every one of the multiple large windows in the house. Each guest room is carefully decorated with an eye to comfort and ease, and features access to the out of doors.  There is also a large cathedral ceiling living room that guests are encouraged to lounge in and enjoy the fire and conversation, and another rec room downstairs with bar and large screen TV to relax in.

The kitchen is in the centre of the B and B and this is where Tricia offers her cooking classes.  A certified nutritionist, she loves to speak to her passion of healthy, nutritious, delicious tasting food made out of local ingredients.  These ingredients couldn’t get more local; one cooking class is about cooking with maple syrup, which Tricia’s husband Doug produces out of their own sap in the mini syrup house next to the main house.   The other class, on cooking with wild leeks, begins with a walk out to the woods to pick your lunch on the spot!

In each class Tricia, a registered holistic nutritionist, speaks about the health benefits of the ingredients, then their versatility and shares many recipes which will be made and then eaten by the cooking class participants!  Each class is approximately three hours long and ends with a four or five course luncheon made out of the featured ingredient.  The price of $50 per person includes a powerpoint presentation, cooking demonstration, recipes and lunch.  Maple syrup classes will be featured from February 27 to April 3 approximately while the wild leeks classes will run in April and May.

In addition to being a Bed and Breakfast and offering cooking classes, Forks in the Trail offers maple syrup making, walking, skiing and snowshoeing trails, yoga, and nutritional consulting.  Tricia and Doug love to make recommendations to local events, galleries, restaurants and other local attractions to their guests to make their stay more enjoyable.  Forks in the Trail can be reached at 705-487-5723 or through the website at www.forksinthetrail.com.
